Hi
I had a similar question a couple of weeks ago, concerning hyper, but
this one is more important.
I have to use an old Laptop which does not have a WIN key, which I
usually map to super (and use frequently)
Now I thought of doing two things, since I never use capslock:
- switch capslock and control.
- map capslock to super.
The xmodmap code for swapping control and capslock is:
remove Lock = Caps_Lock
remove Control = Control_L
keysym Control_L = Caps_Lock
keysym Caps_Lock = Control_L
add Lock = Caps_Lock
add Control = Control_L
The code of mapping Capslock (not swapped) to super is.
remove Lock = Caps_Lock
keysym Caps_Lock = Super_L
add Mod4 = Super_L
Both work, so I want to combine them using
remove Lock = Caps_Lock
remove Control = Control_L
keysym Control_L = Super_L
keysym Caps_Lock = Control_L
add Mod4 = Super_L
add Lock = Caps_Lock
But super is mapped correctly but control now is no longer there
Anybody has an idea?

Thanks this works, well sort of, because one I use keys, whose binding I
have defined via the KDE keybinding interface, than the setting
generated by xmodmap is overwritten and using xmodmap again does not
help:'(

How does that interface work? What does the settings file look like?
Does it look anything like the output of
xkbcomp -xkb :0 display.xkb
? I don't know anything about KDE (and don't much want to ;-), but
maybe the above will give you a hint?

KDE3 (trinity, a fork which keeps KDE3 alive) has a control center very
similar to the one MacOS provides, in fact I think it is a copy
One point entry is called
Computer Administration-> keyboard&mouse-> keyboards shortcuts
(its configuration file is called kdeglobals)
But in no moment I see xkbcomp or something like this

No, you won't. It will be buried somewhere pretty deep in the
internals. But if the KDE thingee won't let you set Super and
Control, you'll have to work around it, probably by messing with the
config file. The question is what is its format.

It is the evil setxkbmap command which blows up my setting I generated
with xmodmap.
Setxkbmap is called when I change my keyboard layout say from US to IL
(for openoffice and friends)
It seems that setxkbmap has no ability to achieve, what I achieve via
xmodmap.
The most natural candidate would be
setxkbmap -option caps:super,ctrl:swapcaps
But this does not work :'(

Well, it's a syntax error for one thing.
setxkbmap -option caps:super -option ctrl:swapcaps
Also, I suspect order matters, and the above replaces the Caps_Lock
keysym with Super_L, so that there is no Caps_Lock key to swap with
Control_L and swapcaps just fails silently.
