There's no error here. What's the problem?
Well the vc-annotate buffer is not displayed. I also sent a
bug report to GNU emacs since I tried it out also with GNU
emacs 23.1 (that is the latest version in Kubuntu 10.1) with
and it failed in all of them.
I then tried vc-annotate with different rev versions and
indeed then I found a critical number such that it worked for
all version below this number.
I removed the version from the branch via rcs -orev and then
vc-annotate worked again!
BTW there is no emacs command for rcs -o?
So I am not sure what to conclude, maybe I should contact
directly the author of that function.

I think you're going to have to supply the RCS ,v file.
Ok,
here it comes. Since I sometime checkin automatically
using the after-save-hook so that is why there are around
120 checkins.
When I remove version 2.2 (rcs -o2.2 lettre.tex) then
vc-annotate works.
I have the feeling it is a coding problem (caused by
x-symbols most likely)
I looked at the ,v file and there is something odd, in
version 1.88 parts of another file appear (and they should
not be in) either this part escaped my kill ring or one of
my registers which I use extensively, but again this is in
version 1.88 and not in 2.2.
I tried to debug
vc-rcs-annotate-command but this is an ordeal since it runs
through 120 checkins.

Here is a better example besides it is a lisp file actual
version 1.89.
There the situation is worse vc-annotate for all versions
below 1.87, but even if I remove the critial and newer onces
vc-annotate does not work!

Here is another bug trace. Since the other file was a lisp
file I don't think x-symbol is the culprit now I think it is
more likely that bm-bookmarks might be the culprit.
