gcc version 2.95.3
I am not root, so I configure with --prefix, --exec-prefix and set
LDFLAGS to help point to libraries I have installed. I had the
following issues when I tried to compile 21.4.5:
First, when I did configure it failed. After looking into I discovered
that it was trying to build in ToolTalk but had encountered this
problem:
ld.so.1: ./conftest: fatal: libtt.so.2: open failed: No such file or directory
I got around that by explicitly adding "-L/usr/openwin/lib
-R/usr/openwin/lib" to my LDFLAGS setting.
Then it configured fine and got most of the way through building until
it failed with this:
Dumping under the name xemacs
unexec():
dldump(/adc_local_apps/ut/export/sparc-sun-solaris2.7/t/xemacs/21.4.5/distrib/src/xemacs):
ld.so.1: ./temacs: fatal:
/adc_local_apps/ut/export/sparc-sun-solaris2.7/t/xemacs/21.4.5/distrib/src/xemacs:
unknown dynamic entry: 1879048176
Any ideas?

I've seen this reported before, I don't do solaris so I don't know
what it means, have you tried configuring with --pdump?

are caused by using GNU ld. There are several workarounds available:
In XEmacs 21.2 or later, configure using the new portable dumper
(--pdump).
Alternatively, you can link using the Sun version of ld, which is
normally held in /usr/ccs/bin. This can be done by one of:
- building gcc with these configure flags:
configure --with-ld=/usr/ccs/bin/ld --with-as=/usr/ccs/bin/as
- adding -B/usr/ccs/bin/ to CFLAGS used to configure XEmacs
(Note: The trailing '/' there is significant.)
- uninstalling GNU ld.
The Solaris2 FAQ claims:
When you install gcc, don't make the mistake of installing
GNU binutils or GNU libc, they are not as capable as their
counterparts you get with Solaris 2.x.

However, I have seen this problem, and I DO NOT have GNU binutils
and/or GNU ld. It's related to the version of gcc, but I don't
remember which versions did this and under what conditions. Haven't
seen it lately with gcc 2.95.3 or gcc 3.0.

Bizarre. I've only ever seen it with GNU ld/binutils, and using the
solaris versions has always cleared it up for me. Looks like we have
another candidate for the PROBLEMS file.

I'll fess up and plead guilty to GNU binutils being the source of my
problem. --pdump with gcc 2.95.3 worked fine...

It depends. gcc does both compile time _and_ runtime searching for
ld and as, so if gnu ld and as were in 'non-standard' locations, then
gcc would not have found them => /usr/ccs/bin/ versions would have been
used (hmm, I'm getting pretty vague there myself ;-)
Anyway, Scott's problems appear to be fixed. I guess this is a good
time to ask Stephen to consider making --pdump the default for the
next development branch of XEmacs (21.7? 22.1?) Are there any
major platforms on which it's known not to work?
