        Sorry for a followup to my own post, or rather sorry for posting w/out
investigating the problem first. It turned out that in
custom-set-faces, most of my faces were specified with (background
light) whereas my current background is "dark". I still do not know
why it worked before, but looks like it was another bug that got
fixed.

 still there - most of my customized faces look like (also redefined)
 default face. This is true for at least font lock and gnus. OTOH,
