The problem was that under certain conditions athena would get detected when it shouldn't. There was a patch from Alexei Mahotkin to fix that but it had the side effect of changing the effective default. I think we should leave it as is until somebody has time to think carefully about the semantics of autodetection here. Comments welcome.
