XEmacs crash (was: flyspell-mode became incredibly slow)

I emphasize "seems", as I have no way of finding out if something in my chain of POPping puts that in. It is unlikely, because it only seems to affect Mike's posting, but you never know. So I have three questions: 1) Is the escaped string for real and if so, what does it mean (looks like some command to a terminal driver) 2) How can I prevent XEmacs to display it and keep running? 3) As I consider this a bug - how can I fix it? This particular version of the string causes no problem - but then, it is not exactly like the above version.
