The AUTHOR_VERSION is actually available to the package machinery at build time. The VERSION (which is what appears in the name of the tarball) is used in a number of places in the build process, so probably the preferred solution is to arrange that AUTHOR_VERSION be available at run-time, so that list-packages and friends can display it.
