I didn't realize that you were running XEmacs 21.2, Peter. I'm running
an XEmacs 21.1.9 installation, which *may* explain why I cannot
reproduce the problem. Let me build an XEmacs 21.2 this weekend and see
if I can get it to happen then. I will try to copy your installation as
closely as possible. Judging by the kernel version, you're on a RedHat
6.1 system, n'est-ce pas? I just happen to have one of those handy...

I understand your situation. The problem is not urgent for me, as the
menus will still usefully inform me of the valid options, and problems
that you cannot reproduce you are unlikely to be able to fix.
I'm now on 6.2, and the behaviour is unchanged.
