bad redrawing performance

(21.5.27) behaves terribly. For example, M-x shell, then run say, 'ps aux'
redraws over and over.
Please submit a full bug report. For starters, there are at least
three different display engines (Xlib, Xft, and GTK+) available on X,
so a copy of Installation would be useful. Presence of widgets and
dialogs can affect redisplay, too. It's very complex.
It would also be nice to know *what* is being redrawn, exactly.
