That is a bit odd. I did not need to do that. Hm
Without that, "C-h v AUCTeX-version" would give me the version of the
xemacs-packages auctex package, so xemacs-packages probably comes before
site-packages in load-path?
1. Some thing is wrong with auctex. May I send you offlist the
auctex package I used and you send me yours to see, whether this
is the source of error.
I put a pkgsrc binary package at
<https://www2.nt.tu-darmstadt.de/~hf/pkgsrc/xemacs-auctex-11.92.tgz>;. It
is essentially a tarball with a bit of meta information, which you can
ignore. Untar it wherever convenient (the elisp files should be
independent of PREFIX), add the site-packages dir to load-path, and you
should be set.
