new GNU smtpmail.el variable, ssl, gmail port 465

Hi I usually send my mail via smtpmail, gmails smtp server and the port 587 using starttls. However now this port is blocked in the site I am currently and I am forced to use the port 465 and ssl not starttls (I checked that with thunderbird: port 465 + ssl is ok 465+starttls does not work and 587+starttls is blocked.) Now the smtpmail xemacs ships seems not to deal with this situation, however the smtpmail.el GNU emacs 24 ships has the variable smtpmail-stream-type 'ssl which can be set to ssl and Which seems to be needed. However the GNU emacs 24 smtpmail.el has a lot of new functions unknown to xemacs. So - Did somebody successfully port the latest GNU emacs 24 smtpmail.el to Xemacs - or did succeed to send via gmail smtp, port 465 and ssl in some other way?
