goes in other countries, but in France, Ph.D. defense is just a matter of
protocol. Once you're authorized to defend, it means that you've got it.
In the US, it *is* possible to fail the defense. Usually your committee
won't allow it to be scheduled till they're sure you're ready, but I know
one case at my previous university where somebody walked in out of the hall
to watch the defense (which is, of course, open for everybody), and during
the question and answer segment, out of the blue asked "Isn't it possible
that back there in equation 23, that X could be zero, invalidating your entire
premise?".
The committee had little choice but to fail the defense....
