I don't want to start another flamewar, but the reason why I haven't asked for an update of the auctex package (and several others) is that I get it from auctex directly. For all other things, I install manually or rely on Debian unstable---and keep wondering for how long I can stay away from shiny new GNU Emacs which even if still from CVS compares well to XEmacs.
