Just out of curiosity (as I don't follow the newsgroups that much),
how many people are opposed to Mule? I had the impression it was
pretty well established, having been adopted by both FSF and XEmacs.
Of course, I don't use it much, being an American.
If it's just good old Erik with his cl-emacs, I can almost guarantee
you that man will never ally himself with a Perl programmer.
