Let me un-second this!
There are all these programs that use some crappy toolkit (GTK+
springs to mind, even though I've used it exactly because it is
cross-platform...) that (a) looks awful anyway (b) refuses to play
nicely with the system standard for customization.
In the Good Old Days, if I wanted to customize the appearance of any
program I used, I knew how to do it, and moreover could do it in a way
that depended easily on the properties of the display I happened to be
using at the time. (The X resource mechanism.)
Now I never know where to customize anything - Xdefaults? gtkrc?
gtkrc-2.0? .gnome/foo/bar ? .kde/tweak ?
Once I've worked out where, I have to work out how - and of course
nobody writes proper man pages any more. Then I have to use some
incredibly complex lash up (which I've never worked out) to get
different results on an SGVA display from on a high-res widescreen
LCD.
I keep meaning to propose a student project to make GTK understand X
resources - perhaps I should really do it.
