I don't know about ps-bdf.el. It's needed for complete coverage of
Mule charsets, I suppose, but the idea of using X bitmaps to print
fills me with horror.
ps-mule.el is going to require a lot of porting because it uses the
"string-as-*byte" functionality, which is a horrible kludge.

At least this time commenting out Mule won't destroy people's data.
I will, however, veto any patch if the resulting library doesn't check
for unsupported charsets and issue a warning if (featurep 'mule).
Wasting paper and toner is not nice, either.
