[I'd be surprised if this hadn't (at some time) been discussed to death, so my apologies if I'm beating a very dead horse.] Line and column numbering are inconsistent. When the cursor is in an empty buffer, the line number is 1 and the column number is 0. I'm used to zero-based arrays, so I expect both to be 0.
