Michael, what was your idea to improve matters?
Essentially this:
Leave ~/.emacs as it is, only adding a line that tells XEmacs that the
user is not interested in ~/.xemacs/init.el. This line, which was
formerly added through customize, is now added "manually", avoiding the
potential corruption we've been seeing.
