Yes, for some bizarre reason, the xemacs-pkg does not get the official
version number correctly.
What's so bizarre about these definitions in
packages/xemacs-packages/auctex/Makefile
VERSION = 1.46
AUTHOR_VERSION = 11.55

The XEmacs package tarballs are just numbered sequentially.
First they are pre-released, then declared released, or superseded
quickly, if broken.
M-x list-packages
and press
i runs the command pui-display-info
which will have this to say about auctex 1.46:
Installed upstream ver: 11.55 Available upstream ver: 11.55
