BTW, the current code should work as good as before, and bugs[1] should
be squashed out. The following patches will be ifdefable-out, so any
existing bug is a real bug.

[1] I know of only two of them, the '\n' printed at the start and the leftover
message in the message buffer. I think they may be related.
