New thread: this is a bug, not a bad dream.
Well, this has been discussed before; see
http://article.gmane.org/gmane.emacs.xemacs.beta/25929
(How do you unroll a thread in gmane?)
I don't really consider it a bug per se, I was just hoping that this is
adopted as a feature request as long as we were talking about the future
and OS X came up.
Are you using the Carbon branch, or the mainline using the X11 display?
Carbon.
It should be easy enough (and probably preferred by most users, to
keep consistency with other applications) to reconfigure X11 with
xmodmap rather than to hack something in to XEmacs. (I haven't
bothered because I have more problems with finding parens on the Mac
than with using the ESC key as Meta, but since others find this a pain
I'll take a look.)

A Cocoa/*Step port would be nice, but AFAIK we don't have anybody
working on it. So that's not a near-term solution.
Yes, I know. I should probably work on it myself. as you'll
see in that thread, I did contribute to the original XEmacs port by
Andrew. I had created a patch that allows the Alt/Option key to be
Meta. However, a later patch by Andrew which I have identified does
something that prevents my patch from working. Another thing that
is holding me back is the recent Cocoa port of Emacs just works the
"right" way and it is just too easy to use that right now.
