Andy, buttons appear and disappear with no apparent underlying

I am competely confused and disoriented.
These sound like bugs.
The current logic is:
for the currently selected buffer, put in the tabs:
- all buffers with the same major-mode
- all buffers with the same mode-name
- all buffers that have the same major-mode name prefix up to '-'
i.e. vm-mode and vm-summary-mode are considered as being in the same
group.
If gnus buffers match these criteria then you are seeing bugs. If they
don't then tell me what criteria I can use to group buffers. Incidentally
if you set buffers-tab-selection-function to nil you will get the old
behaviour of seeing all tabs. i.e. what commonality is there beween
*Article* and *Group* that I can use. The alternative is that we get
package maintainers to put a buffer-group symbol in each buffer that they
create.
