Stephen, I completely agree with your concerns. However, in this case
what works for me is:
1. Add a trivial change to the regexps in `inversion-decoders'. The
   change is trivial, because as you say beta and patch versions are
   mutually exclusive.

2. Cross fingers that this was the only road bump in getting
   CEDET/XEmacs-21.5 to work again.
   [mod: apparently it is not]
3. Have a closer look at inversion.el and see how things can be
   implemented using native XEmacs features.
BTW, my original question (whether beta and patch could be non-nil at
the same time) applies either way. And again, the changes will be much
more straight forward because of your answer.
