But pasting has not been expensive (at least for "small" pastes),
while cuts are always expensive. I thought that (at least for Motif)
this was because we always did something like a paste to the clipboard
anyway. The comments in select-x.c seem to indicate that there was an
attempt to implement a mere assertion of ownership, with the data
being transferred only on request, and this didn't work.
