xft and underscores getting worse!?

Hi, Since some months it seems like the problems with xft fonts and underscores are getting worse. As I get it there are some display problems with xft, that we have debated as whether they are major or minor. I have up till now considered them as minor compared to the other benefits of xft fonts. What I can see since a few months is that underscores are normally not visible at all. Redraw of the screen will not help. Could it be something with new version of X or new font definitions or have we changed something that could cause this?
