Inquiring minds want to know. 21.4 is getting long in the tooth, and
it really isn't appropriate in Unicode environments, which is pretty
much everywhere. Besides the default Unicode support, what features
that are /already/ in 21.5 need to be stabilized for /your/ daily
needs?
What features that 21.5 /doesn't/ have yet do you need?
Think "small" here. No Lisp engine rewrites, (much as I would
personally like it) no Unicode internal representation, etc. Stuff
that's doable so we can get something out the door, and get back on
track.
Or can we even get "back on track"? What do you all think?
Without a basic synch to Emacs 22, no. There are wagonloads of improved
APIs and functionality in the basics (like font-locking and
customization types and other stuff). Application programmers no longer
are willing to tie themselves to what amounts to Emacs 20.3 APIs. The
Emacs universe is large enough that you don't want to get cut out of
what people do for it. The more you let yourself cut out, the more
XEmacs becomes a playground for programmers with their own personal
projects forming a spotty feature landscape instead of an encompassing
editing solution.
Getting "back on track" is not useful if you can't pick up speed.
You'll just end up as roadkill.
If you say that is not "stuff that's doable", then you are having
a problem in my opinion. Then we are more talking about "where do you
want to stay today".
