mly (Richard Mlynarik) did that in early Emacs v18, circa late '86 or
early '87. He'd been tasked with terminal.el at a time when he'd
never previously encountered the UNIX tty interface. He was pretty
horrified. A lot of argument went down when terminal.el was released,
but it stayed that way until RMS censored it. I didn't know XEmacs
still had a coarse version.
lcs.mit.edu suggests that mly is at xerox now, if anyone cares.
