This is exactly why EFS is not the right place to do this: it's very
ftp-centric, and you want to be able to dispatch to the other
protocols as well. In fact, W3 handles exactly the translation
needed. All somebody'd have to do is hack up a file-name handler
which recognizes URLs and hands them off to W3.
So, I think Stephen's assessment is right on the button.
My own medium-term planned work on XEmacs is on bugfixing, so it's not
really on my list currently.
