XEmacs works here (glibc 2.1 test release, Linux 2.1.126 on i486)

with ncurses 4.2 - and this is to be expected since XEmacs doesn't
need a special curses version. It might be that your installation of
ncurses is somehow broken. Please copy & paste the exact error
message you get and send it.
