IIRC, the fonts are arguably broken. XEmacs computes the extent to
clear by taking the max of the ascent and descent over the string to
display. There is currently no real workaround for fonts that write
outside of the bounding boxes they specify, although you should be
able to force a full redisplay with C-l.
