Using
xemacs -unmapped -eval '(gnuserv-start)' &
instead (after <https://lwn.net/Articles/170624/>) helped immediately in
the cases (archlinux, and spuriously on netbsd-8) where it occurred.
Still puzzled why the original stance would work _sometimes_...
