I think I have a partial clue as to what is going on.
When I pick a font like '-*-Courier-medium-r-*-*-*-120-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1'
and do xlsfonts I get the following list.
When gary does the same command, he gets
You and Gary should both do a 'xset q', which will show the font path that
the X server is using. It tries the directories listed, in order. Most
likely, one or the other of you is doing a 'xset +fp' to prepend a font dir.
Quick summary:
xset +fp /some/dir adds to front of list
xset fp+ /some/dir adds to end
xset fp rehash to make it re-read all the directories
Second hint - if you know you're on a 100dpi screen (or close to it), you
may want to try eliminating all '75dpi' directories from the path. At least
that works for me - if you're on a 100dpi monitor, 75dpi fonts look TINY, and
if you're on a 75dpi monitor, 100dpi fonts look "too big".
(Apparently, SUn uses '72' instead of '75'.. Add salt and pepper to taste
;)
