The crash is due to a bug in X; it's crashing while attempting to query the server for the font. So attempting to check for the font will cause the crash. If this turns out to be the problem, I suggest you complain to the vendor. The Helvetica fonts by Adobe are free and come with the publically released X11R6 distribution. There's no excuse for not having them. Alternatively, on systems that provide Helvetica-like fonts (most obviously, MS Arial), it should be possible to alias Helvetica to such a system font. Please direct further correspondence to xemacs-beta(a)xemacs.org, or the newsgroup comp.emacs.xemacs.
