Most likely you don't have a Helvetica bold available. You can either
install one, or set the X resources for *menubar*fontset and
*dialog*fontset to some font that you do have.
The crash is due to a bug in X; it's crashing while attempting to
query the server for the font. So attempting to check for the font
will cause the crash.
If this turns out to be the problem, I suggest you complain to the
vendor. The Helvetica fonts by Adobe are free and come with the
publically released X11R6 distribution. There's no excuse for not
having them. Alternatively, on systems that provide Helvetica-like
fonts (most obviously, MS Arial), it should be possible to alias
Helvetica to such a system font.
Please direct further correspondence to xemacs-beta(a)xemacs.org, or the
newsgroup comp.emacs.xemacs. I'll answer where I have time, but if
you send to the mailing list or newsgroup, there are many people who
are competent to help with this kind of question and you are likely to
get a much faster response.
