This has been on my list for a very long time; you're welcome to it

The FSF version from FSF 20.4 or maybe it was 20.5 used
"string-as-{multi,uni}byte" in an essential way; it was quite ugly.
It also made heavy use of the rather ugly BDF-to-Postscript bitmap
capability to handle non-Latin languages. I found it preferable to
simply \input whole files in a LaTeX verbatim environment.
I hope it's better now ....
