However, currently path searching for *all* directories that XEmacs needs to find works in a completely uniform way, and I think that's a highly desirable situation. Making a special deal for "package roots" (a concept that doesn't currently exist in XEmacs) would further complicate an already-way-too-complicated situation, which is why I don't favor this kind of change. Moreover, I expect people running in-place to be able to cope with this kind of problem and be aware (in principle) of the issues here.
