What do you mean by "slow"? Your Installation suggests that you have
a 2.66GHz 4-CPU machine....

There is a known problem where the Linux kernel, ssh, and XEmacs
interact badly. It also affects GNU Emacs. It's been a while since
I've heard such reports, so your issue may be something different.
I'll have to dig up those reports; there was a workaround (some
unusual way to configure XEmacs or ssh).
I had exactly this problem with b27, but it is fixed in recent cvs
versions. (I'm running a debug version of cvs compiled 64bit on a
sparc64 (Sun T1000 Niagra, 6core) machine, and it has all manner of
other crash problems, but this, at least, has been fixed ;)
