I have successfully used this to create simple major and minor modes.
However this is not a trivial task. Especially if you are not familiar with
emacs-lisp.

I'm mainly replying to make sure my mailing-list/gmane problem is fixed.
But, I definitely agree with Steve. In fact, a nice example of derived-
mode is on pp. 131-2.
