This is what I see on my personal build on Ubuntu as well. (Well the
set of fonts is different, but everything I looked at is greyed out.)
The screen shot looks pretty nice so it seems as if xft fonts are
being used.

I get something similar, except DejaVu Sans Mono is not selected (and
actually not listed). After loading my init fils, the buttons are
selected. But my xresources are not empty. The only font related
thing I have is:
XEmacs*menubar.fcFontName: Bitstream Vera Sans-10
