I get that error a lot lately, now that I've started properly using
XEmacs again. Sometimes it happens while using other programs,
sometimes while using XEmacs, between two keystrokes. I can't tell
what triggers it.
It's pretty annoying, as I had to restart ~10 times in about six
hours.
I use Sawfish under Gnome, all on Red Hat Linux 9 with XFree 4.3.0.
The same thing happens at home with an nVidia GeForce 2 card, and at
work on an ATI card which is too embarrassingly old to name in a
public forum.
As for my XEmacs setup, I turned off buffer tabs by customizing
gutter-buffers-tab-visible-p. I turned off the graphical progress
gauge by setting progress-feedback-use-echo-area (sic!) to t. I can't
think of anything else, unusual or graphics-related that I might be
doing -- the rest of my .emacs are innocuous variable settings (think
kill-whole-line, make-backup-files and such) and key bindings.
