Well, the first thing I'd try is upgrading to the latest stable release
(21.4.22). (Though that's not a prerequisite for the next step.)
The second thing I'd try is to see if the problem is entirely internal
to XEmacs, or if it has something to do with X. Do you get the same
hang if you start XEmacs with -nw?
