I didn't know about that option. I'll experiment with it.
Stephen is right: --without-prefix will get you your "two modes", as
it's sensitive to where you're starting XEmacs from. It will not notice
your previous installation, if you're starting in-place. On the other
hand, back in the day, a bunch of people wanted exactly the behavior
you're now complaining about. So let me know if --without-prefix
doesn't work for you.
