For editing buffers and strings, if it has a corresponding registered charset which is known to Mule, just load a Unicode Consortium format mapping file. If it's Unicode-only, you would create a new "private" Mule charset, give them arbitrary code points, and use the mapping functions in unicode.c that are exported to Lisp to explicitly map them to Unicode. Fonts must correspond to a registered charset for core X; since we don't have a Unicode charset there's no easy way to display Unicode fonts.
