i have the suspicion that "modern desktop systems" _completely_
_disable_ the bitmap fonts
＠OP, could you please have a look at the result of the command
xlsfonts -fn '-adobe-courier*'
on my desktop PC, it is a 226 elements list
On my desktop (which is running the same base as the OP's), I get
``pattern "-adobe-courier*" unmatched'', but that just means
Adobe's
Courier isn't installed. I still have bitmap fonts.
