Don't ask me what happened the first time, but at least some packages
didn't get copied correctly. I've now put a new set of files into
/pub/xemacs/beta/experimental/packages that have the correct sums.
The packages are ok now.
I had to first delete the packages that had previously
gotten the checksum errors from /tmp though.
