Probably, but who knows? GTK I18N docs are nonexistent, the
ChangeLogs and News files are discouraging, containing comments about
"the internal representation is in flux". I don't have time to follow
another ML or read the source, and nobody else on XEmacs-beta seems to
know.
It is highly likely that by the time XEmacs TUG (The Unicode
Generation) appears, GTK will have that sorted, somewhat less likely
that it will be accurately documented.
The big objection for X users, though, is fonts. Last time I looked,
using TrueType fonts supplied with Japanese Windows outside of Windows
was illegal; that was a couple of years ago, though, and it is not
clear a court would enforce. But there are in general few fonts, even
in Windows, that cover the whole range of Unicode; I suspect that GTK
is probably not going to provide functionality equivalent to Ben's
charset-keyed font specifiers.
So for the next couple of years I imagine we will have to manage
multiple fonts, each with a limited range of charset coverage, to get
full Mule functionality.
