Actually, sqlite3 is not a Python thingie: http://www.sqlite.org/ Like MySQL, PostgreSQL and a number of other relational databases it does have a Python wrapper though. The sqlite source is distributed with Python though. This gives Python a guaranteed SQL presence out-of-the-box.
