I wouldn't bother with 21.4 if I were you. The reason things are screwed up now is undoubtedly that I put in some patches for people (one was Alexei Mahotkin, I forget the other offhand) who said they simply could not build their prefrred config in their environment (athena was getting pulled in whether or not they wanted it in one case), and I couldn't find a way either. So unless you're repairing a similarly wedged situation, I'm not going to be real happy about making any changes to the ./configure. That whole area needs a complete rewrite, and I doubt I'm going to let that through, either. Currently I have not heard of anyone who cannot get XEmacs configured and built with --with-widgets=<toolkit>, and if toolkit==athena, they pretty much must specify --with-athena=<flavor> as well.
