Problem with configure i586-linux-gnu

I experienced a small problem while installing xemacs-21.2-b12 on my
intel linux 2.2.2/glibc-2.1 system.
As usual I configured
./configure --prefix= i586-linux-gnu
And as I expected, the things that should go in exec-/doc-directory
were installed to /lib/xemacs-21.2-b12/i586-linux-gnu.
But when xemacs starts up it searches in
/lib/xemacs-21.2-b12/i586-pc-linux, the directory derived from the
canonical arch name and complains about exec-/doc-directory not being
correctly set.
I replaced the occurences of i586-pc-linux with i586-linux-gnu in
config.status, reran it, and installation went fine.
