And the next step, make the modeline a real widget so that I can have
only one modeline per XEmacs frame.
I think this is all good stuff but trying to tackle it at the same time as
doing a GTK port is going to bring BillP's project to a grinding halt. If
you do this you have to redesign/recode *all* platforms rather than just
implementing a new one, which because of the abstraction in XEmacs is
relatively easy.
