I tried the version of rx.el that is shipped with GNU Emacs 23.2.1 with the latest tip version of 21.5. I could load it without any complains. I then wrote som unit tests based the documentation in the file and most of them was broken. But some of them didn't work with GNU Emacs either!? I didn't look into the relevance of the unit tests but why not test that version of rx with your modified python-mode.el. It might suffice or you will get some good feedback for what is broken with XEmacs.
